According to experts at the University of Basel in Switzerland, it became aware of the outcome of the operation, in which special nasal cartilage, created by scientists in the laboratory using tissue engineering techniques.
Creation of cartilage was carried out as follows: from the nasal septum of the patient in need of surgery, extracted several cartilage cells are placed in a special membrane collagen. In this membrane, the necessary cartilage “grew”, which was transplanted to the patient. Modern tissue engineering has advanced far ahead: now it allows you to control cell growth process to form the body of the desired shape and quality. Thanks to this control, the cells fill in the existing defects of the damaged organ.
New method to restore nasal cartilage has not yet gained its popularity because passes the required tests. They agreed to the experiment five elderly with significant defects of the nose as a result of the effect of skin cancer. Already one year after the introduction of laboratory cartilage, all patients were completely satisfied with the results of the procedure.
Swiss scientists believe that this method of restoration of the nose to avoid a number of extremely problematic complications that arise during conventional surgery.
